These Lakes offer some of the best Smallmouth Bass fishing in the world. The season opens the 3rd Saturday in June for U.S. waters and the 4th Saturday in June for Canadian waters. At this time of year the majority of fish are in post-spawn with catches of 25 or more fish per day being common. For Lake St. Clair the best baits are 1/2oz. Double Willow Spinnerbaits in chartreuse, Jerkbaits (clown color), and 3½" Tubes in either dark green or brown. You should fish in the 6-10 foot depth range targeting weed beds or rock piles. The best areas are the mouths of all the channels in the northeast corner, and the west and south sides of the lake. Specifically the area's to either side of the Detroit River mouth to 2 miles up the shoreline in each direction. This area is very rocky at all depths. For Lake Erie you should fish in the 10-25 foot depth range targeting rock humps which can be found using your electronics. The preferred method of fishing is to drift over these rock piles using 3½" Tubes with at least a ¼" weight in dark green or brown. If the wind moves you along too fast you may need to use a wind sock. The best areas are the reefs on the north shore or around any of the many islands.
